What is Vedic Astrology?

indian vedic astrology

Vedic astrology is by no means a mere fortune-telling game. The purpose or goal of the subject is to drive away the fear of the unknown and thus to provide a scope to build a stronger sense of self. The subject is much more than the sun sign or a newspaper horoscope. This is as expansive as the Universe and as unique as you.

Though the subject is vast, I have gathered much information and experience in the last twenty-five years of dealing with it. I accommodated the relevant portions from the acknowledged sources into this site.

I am confident that the information will be of great use to all. With the help of this site, you will be able to build your own insight even if you don’t have any basic knowledge about the subject.

What is the Vedic Method of Astrology?

Different astrologers described the term in different ways. This may be called a pseudo-science interpreting the supposed effect of the heavenly bodies on human existence.

The word Astrology was originally derived from the Greek root ‘astron’, which refers to stars and ‘logia’, which means word or speech.

The best definition of the subject is found in the book ‘Astrology for Yourself’ by Demetra George and Douglas Bloch. In this book, the authors described it as “a language, art and science that study the relationship between the cycles of celestial bodies and the affairs of people on earth.”

This is a tool that can help us to glimpse into our purpose in life and gain a stronger sense of self. It can teach us how to live harmoniously with the Universe by exploring our inner potential.

He who knows himself knows the best.

The History of Vedic Astrology

Mesopotamia map

Astrology, an ancient practice, has evolved into three main branches: Western, Indian, and Chinese Astrology. Its roots trace back to Mesopotamia and Babylonia in 3600 B.C., initially used for weather predictions and foreseeing potential disasters. Over time, astrologers gained importance, advising kings and influential figures. The Babylonians introduced the Zodiac, spreading to Greece, Rome, and Europe by the 14th century. In America, astrology gained popularity after 1900, thanks to figures like Evangeline Adams. The Indian system, present in the Vedas around 1000-1500 B.C., remains influential, with many embracing astrological guidance in daily life. Chinese astrology, dating back to 3000 B.C., became prominent during the Shing dynasty (1766-1050 B.C).

Important Terminology in Vedic Astrology

For those diving into astrology basics, understanding the terminology is crucial. Often, common lexicons lack these terms or provide astronomical, not astrological, meanings. This gap can hinder comprehension of one’s natal chart or astrological content.

To bridge this knowledge gap, this page offers a glossary with commonly used astrological words and their meanings. It serves as a handy reference, encouraging learners to familiarize themselves with these terms before delving deeper into the intricacies of astrology.

Your ruling sign is where the Sun happened to be when you were born. (All dates given are inclusive).

Zodiac Sign Classifications

Zodiac Signs in Vedic Astrology

In Vedic Astrology, the classification of zodiac signs follows a distinct system compared to Western Astrology. Vedic Astrology is based on the sidereal zodiac, which considers the actual positions of stars.

The zodiac is divided into 12 equal segments, known as Rashis or signs, with each Rashi spanning 30 degrees. The classification begins with Aries, corresponding to the position of the Sun during the Vernal Equinox.

Unlike Western Astrology, Vedic Astrology places a strong emphasis on the moon sign, known as the “Rashi,” alongside the sun sign. The moon sign is determined by the position of the moon at the time of one’s birth and holds significant importance in shaping an individual’s emotional and mental characteristics.

Each zodiac sign is associated with specific qualities, elements, and ruling planets, contributing to a comprehensive astrological profile in Vedic Astrology.

The 12 Houses of Vedic Astrology

The 12 Houses of Vedic Astrology

In Vedic Astrology, the 12 houses play a pivotal role in shaping an individual’s life and destiny. Each house represents specific aspects of one’s existence, creating a comprehensive map of the celestial influences on various facets of life. The first house, known as the Ascendant or Lagna, signifies the self and overall personality. Subsequent houses delve into matters like wealth, communication, home life, creativity, and partnerships. The ninth house relates to spirituality and higher learning, while the tenth house governs career and public reputation. Through the intricate web of these houses, Vedic Astrology provides profound insights into the complexities of an individual’s journey, offering a celestial blueprint that guides and influences every aspect of life.

Understanding a Vedic Astrology Chart

horoscope or astrology natal chart

A Vedic Astrology Natal Chart, also known as a Janam Kundli, is a detailed map of the celestial positions at the time of an individual’s birth.

It serves as a comprehensive cosmic blueprint, outlining the precise locations of planets, stars, and other celestial bodies in relation to the Earth. The purpose of a Vedic Natal Chart is to provide profound insights into various aspects of an individual’s life, including personality traits, strengths, challenges, career possibilities, relationships, and the overall trajectory of one’s destiny.

It goes beyond the sun sign, considering the moon sign, planetary aspects, and their influence on different facets of life. By interpreting the intricate details of the Natal Chart, astrologers can offer personalized guidance, helping individuals understand themselves better and navigate the complexities of life with greater awareness.

The chart acts as a tool for self-discovery and a roadmap for making informed decisions aligned with cosmic energies.

Vedic Astrological Remedies

Vedic Astrology remedies encompass a diverse range of practices designed to mitigate challenging planetary influences and enhance positive energies in one’s life. Rooted in ancient traditions, these remedies aim to balance cosmic energies and harmonize the connection between celestial bodies and human life. Remedies can include the use of gemstones, mantras, yantras (sacred geometric symbols), rituals, and charitable activities. Wearing specific gemstones corresponding to favorable planets or chanting potent mantras aligns energies for auspicious outcomes. Yantras act as cosmic antennas, attracting positive vibrations, while rituals and acts of charity contribute to karmic purification. Vedic Astrology remedies offer a holistic approach to navigate life’s challenges, fostering spiritual growth and aligning individuals with the cosmic rhythms that influence their destinies.

Relationship Compatibility

Compatibility in Vedic Astrology

In Vedic Astrology, relationship compatibility is assessed through a detailed analysis of the birth charts of individuals, known as Kundli or Janam Kundali.

By examining the positions of planets, moon signs, and other celestial factors at the time of each person’s birth, astrologers can reveal the potential dynamics between individuals in various relationships. Vedic Astrology provides insights into personality traits, communication styles, and emotional needs, allowing individuals to understand themselves and others on a deeper level.

This understanding is instrumental in finding the right friendships or life partners, as it helps identify harmonious connections and potential challenges in relationships.

Through the guidance of Vedic Astrology, individuals can navigate the complexities of interpersonal dynamics, make informed decisions, and foster connections that align with their cosmic energies, promoting fulfilling and supportive relationships.

Vedic Astrology Marriage Tips

In the realm of marriage, Vedic Astrology plays a crucial role in providing insights and guidance for a harmonious and fulfilling union. By analyzing the cosmic positions at the time of birth through tools like compatibility charts and synastry, Vedic Astrology aims to unveil the potential dynamics between partners. It assesses factors such as moon signs, planetary positions, and the compatibility of Nakshatras (lunar mansions), offering a comprehensive understanding of the couple’s strengths, challenges, and overall compatibility. This astrological insight aids individuals in making informed decisions about their life partner, contributing to the establishment of a strong foundation for a happy and enduring marriage. Vedic Astrology provides a roadmap for navigating potential conflicts, understanding each other’s needs, and fostering communication, fostering a deeper connection between partners and enhancing the likelihood of a joyous and prosperous marital journey.
